The Uri ceremony for Obierika's daughter is very different from the ways we celebrate wedding here. The Igbo traditions are very different and interesting to learn about. Its different because in the Igbo tribe you have to estimate a cost for your wife, the ceremony is mostly for men, everyone cooks for the occasion and helps out. Here our traditions are somewhat different.. The wedding is special for the guy but mostly for the girl. When everyone gets there, the food is served to them unless the guest makes something and brings it they don't have to help with any of the cooking nor setting up. We don't put a price on the brides. The Igbo tribe and the way we do things here are also somewhat the same, All of our family and friends get together to celebrate the day. Its also the same because the women get into their best clothing and get all dressed up.

  • The Igbo people define masculinity as being strong, how much work you do, how many wives you have, how you are ranked and if you are in charge. Americans define masculinity as how well you present yourself as a man.

  • The Igbo tribe is different from the Americans perceptions because they believe that no man is lazy and they do their own work and know how to take charge of the women and children in their household. The Americans believe that the females are treated equal. They are the same because The men in both cultures should be strong and hard workers

  • How the Igbo tribe view their women is wrong and unnecessary. It is their culture and the way they do things but its wrong. It makes me upset to know that the women go through that.

Journal Prompt # 1
What are your first impressions of the novel? How do you feel about the Igbo culture?Name at least 2 ways their culture is different from ours.Name at least 1 way their culture is similar.Post at least one media element.Explain your answers.

My first impressions of "Things Fall Appart" is that its a little boring and interesting at the same time. I feel the Igbo tribe culture is unusual. Their culture is different from ours because we don't treat guys like gods and we also don't marry more than 1 person normally. Our cultures are similar because the expectation of someone is never to be lazy and lazy people don't get far.
